NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Maths, Chapter 2 - Whole Numbers

You have already studied natural numbers in the previous chapter. If you add 1 to a natural number you gets its successor and if you subtract 1 from a natural number you gets its predecessor. In this chapter, you will study the whole numbers. If we add the number zero to the collection of natural numbers, we get the collection of whole numbers. Thus, the numbers 0,1,2,3,3,… form the collection of whole numbers.

In NCERT Maths Book Class 6, Chapter 2 Solutions, as you progress through the chapter you will learn more about whole numbers, number line, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, and some properties of whole numbers like commutativity, associativity, distributivity which are useful in simplifying calculations and we use them without being aware of them. Further, you will study the patterns in the number line. Addition corresponds to moving to the right on the number line, whereas subtraction corresponds to moving to the left. Multiplication corresponds to making jumps of equal distance starting from zero. Both addition and multiplication are associative for whole numbers. At the end of this chapter, you will be provided with a summary of what you have learnt.

Let’s take a look at topics and sub-topics of Class 6 Maths Chapter 2, Whole Numbers

2.1 Introduction

2.2 Whole Number

2.3 The number line

2.4 Properties of Whole Numbers

2.5 Patterns in Whole Numbers

In Class 6 Maths NCERT Solutions Chapter 2, you will learn –

Section 2.2 – In this section, you will study more about natural numbers. As you move further in this section the concept of whole numbers will be introduced.  If we add the number zero to the collection of natural numbers, we get the collection of whole numbers. Every whole number has a successor. Every whole number except zero has a predecessor.

Section 2.3 – This section will teach you number line. We take a line, mark a point on it and label it 0. We then mark out points to the right of 0, at equal intervals. Label them as 1,2,3,… Thus, we have a number line with the whole numbers represented on it. We can easily perform the number operations of addition, subtraction and multiplication on the number line. Addition corresponds to moving to the right on the number line, whereas subtraction corresponds to moving to the left. Multiplication corresponds to making jumps of equal distance starting from zero. Adding two whole numbers always gives a whole number. Similarly, multiplying two whole numbers always gives a whole number. We say that whole numbers are closed under addition and also under multiplication. However, whole numbers are not closed under subtraction and under division. At the end of this section, you will learn that division by 0 is not defined.

Section 2.4 – Now you already know what are whole numbers. This section will teach you the properties of whole numbers through a few games so that you can understand them better. Closure property says that the whole numbers are closed under addition and multiplication. We know that we can add two whole numbers in any order. Also, we can multiply two whole numbers in any order. So we can say that addition and multiplication are commutative for whole numbers. As you move further in this section you will learn that addition and multiplication are associative for whole numbers and multiplication is distributive over addition for whole numbers.

Section 2.5 – In this section, you will learn some patterns in the whole numbers. Patterns with numbers are not only interesting but are useful in simplifying calculations and we use them without being aware of them. They are useful especially for verbal calculations and help us to understand the properties of numbers better. Every number can be arranged as a line. Some numbers can be shown as rectangles. Further, you will learn that some numbers like 4 or 9 can also be arranged as squares and some numbers can also be arranged as triangles.

In this chapter, you are provided with several examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of whole numbers.
