Use the below formula =DATEVALUE("11 Jul 2016") you will get the serial number of the date. Pass this result to below function =Day(Serial_Number) ie =DAY(DATEVALUE("11 Jul 2016"))

This will only work when cell A1 contains valid date value. At times incorrectly entered dates are interpreted by Excel as text. In those scenarios use =DATEVALUE(A1) in place of just A1 in the formulas above. read less
