Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system. A deadlock occurs when two or more processes or transactions block each other from continuing because each has locked a database resource that the other transaction needs. SQL Server handles deadlocks by terminating and rolling back transactions that were started after the first transaction.

To connect to a named instance, the SQL Server Browser service must be running. In SQL Server Configuration Manager, locate the SQL Server Browser service and verify that it's running. If it's not running, start the service. The SQL Server Browser service isn't required for default instances.
