How to score high in IELTS speaking?

The IELTS speaking module is designed to test your ability to produce english sentences when you are asked a question. HAving said that it is important that you practice to answer questions and form YOUR best structure to score high in the test.

The main criteria for marks are:-

  1. ability to express in english language
  2. vocabulary range and accuracy level
  3. grammatical range and ability
  4. pronunciation

Introductory questions -

Introductory questions are asked to confirm the identity of the candidate and also as a warm up exercise.

TIP : You need not be try hard to provide BEST answers here , since this part is not RATED/ scored, just keep your answers short and to-the-point.

Topic questions (PART 1) -

You are asked 3 questions about your daily life

Example -

Q 1 :  First of all let's talk about reading- Do you like to read?

Q2 : Do you visit a library to rad books ?

Q3 : Do you consider reading important ?

TIP : Give yourself atleast 15 seconds , gather your thoughts together and then start talking. This will get you best scores

Speaking Test (PART 2)

Here you wll be given a topic and expected to talk for about 1 -2 minutes. You will be given 1 minute to prepare and even take notes if necessary.

After your 1 minute or a max 2 minute speaking the examiner will ask you a follow up question. This should be answered in 5 seconds or so ( dont take longer than that)

 TIP : Common errors in PART 2

  • Not speaking
  • Not speaking for 1 minute minimum
  • Going Off the topic

The Speaking Test (PART 3)

Here you will be asked follow up questions on the topic given in PArt 2

There will be 4-5 questions - Give yourself 40 seconds to answer each question.

Tip: The questions are basd on the Topic of PART 2 - but remember  - if the question was about Types of food and you talked about Indian Food then PArt 3 questions will not be about Indian food but Just FOOD in general ( so dont get stumped).
