Mere presence of hydrogen atom doesn't make substance acidic, that hydrogen must be ionizable means substance should be able to loose H ATOM as H+ ion and this in turn depends upon the nature of the bond. C-H bond is nonpolar in methane, where as in formic acid we have O-H BOND which is polar and H can...

Loss proton gives a negative ion, if that negative ion is stable then it's corresponding compound is acidic.. Methane by loss of one proton gives CH3- Ion which is unstable, but formate ion stabilised by resonance..... So it is acidic

Actually, it's not only the presence and number of H-atom that makes an organic compound acidic. The acidity of a compound is determined by it ability to loose its H-atom to become a more stable product. If CH4 looses its one H-atom, it will become CH3- . Actually, it's not only the presence and number of H-atom that makes an organic compound acidic. The acidity of a compound is determined by it ability to loose its H-atom to become a more stable product. If CH4 looses its one H-atom, it will become CH3- . CH3- is very very unstable compound, So, it's very very hard for CH4 to loose its H-atom. Hence it is not an acid. If HCOOH (formic acid) looses its one H-atom, it will become HCOO-. Please note that HCOO- is a stable compound because it can form two canonical (Resonant) structure. Hence it is an acid. read less

most acidic is that one which can easily donate proton. after releasing h from methane we get least stable carboanion while in case of formic acid we get resonance stable compound. Hence it is easier to get proton from formic acid.

H in an organic compound is acidic only when it is attached with an atom or group of atoms which have appreciable electron withdrawing effect such that it can abstract electron from hydrogen. Hence, hydrogen can furnish as H+ ion. While in methane, electronegativity difference of carbon and hydrogen is very less hence, H atoms are not acidic. In formic acid, one H is attached with highly electron withdrawing group, COO- thus, it is acidic. Another H is attached to C which is not that much electronegative hence, it is not acidic. read less

Presence of Hydrogen atom is not a requirement for being acidic... CO2 is acidic... NO2 is acidic to be an acid the species should release H+ or H3O+ (hydronium) ion on coming in contact with water... it may or may not have hydrogen in it... water can give hydrogen according to lewis concept acid...

Here no Hydrogen is involved... so definition of acid is not confined to hydrogen... read less
